Fugitive NorCal Teacher Wanted for 14 Years Arrested in Los Angeles on Sex Abuse Charge
A former Northern California elementary school teacher was arrested Wednesday morning, following a dramatic foot chase and struggle in Los Angeles. CBSLA.com reported Jose Montenegro was charged in July 2001 with multiple counts of sodomy of a child under 14, oral copulation and continued sexual abuse of a minor. The charges came after an investigation by detectives in Fremont, CA. The FBI joined the search for Montenegro after police discovered he had fled the U.S. southern border to Mexico. The LAPD recently alerted the FBI that the federal fugitive had been residing locally for several years at a community home in Brooklyn Heights. Montenegro was taken into state custody in Los Angeles pending transfer to the custody of Alameda County law enforcement.
